The earthday celebration sounds like a great idea; increase awareness of sustatainable living and all that. But, something wreaks with the behemoth corporate sponsorship of Whole Foods (which is gobbling up chains by the day) and Sierra Nevada. I guess it's better to have the event than not have it but the support money's a bit dirty (for this kind of event). The teeny tiny donation Sierra's going to make, I suspect, is miniscule in comparison to wheat they make during the event and/or from the publicity they get.

"We are all Environmentalist..." Do you agree? This quote was made by Laurie David during her lecture on the movie "An Inconvenient Truth". Laurie David used this lecture to explain in more depth the severity of global warming and to clarify any questions or misunderstanding viewers may have had about the movie or global warming. She went on to explain that the environment is not a vacation that we sometimes visit, we live in our environment daily and must constantly interact with it-hence we are all "Environmentalist". I understand where she is coming from partially, but is “environmentalist” the appropriate word? I feel that “environmentalist” has a negative connotation associated with it. However could this connotation change if it was used more regularly, as David says, to describe all humans?

I would like to invite anyone from Seeing Green to write a newsletter article for "Simply News" based on your experience at our conference. The deadline is Nov. 15 and you can send it to Marilyn Welker at mwelker@ctcn.net. We'd appreciate a student's perspective, esp. based on your work following the eco-scene over the past months, and some photos! Let's talk - 447-0296, Sarah

We are going to need to get total support from the Undergraduate Student Government. Please take a minute to go to USG.osu.edu, look up the senator to your college and ask them for support.

Did you know OSU spent about $61 million on energy costs last year? Did you know that more money is expected to be spent this year? University consultants are scrambling to lock in good rates and work to update old, energy guzzling appliances with new ones, but what if moer could be done? What if just by planning ahead during the design of a building, it could be guaranteed to use 60% less energy?
It is possible, and all 9 other Big Ten schools are doing it except OSU. By building to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, we could be saving millions of dollars for a fraction of the investment. It has been proven that students and employees that work in a daylit environment perform better, and are actually happier than in a normal building. Some have already realized the benefits of making OSU a LEEDer. The new Ohio Union and the 4-H building are both being built green. However, this is just a start, and we as concerned students, faculty and staff need to set policies in place to get our great University even better.

I'm so happy that the Sierra Student Coalition was able to pull off this great event. Thank you to all the exhibitors and great speakers and people who came out to show supprt. I hope a lot of people found it as inspiring.
Until next year's Scarlet Gray and Green Fair SSC is keeping busy working with Campushed, and umbrella group for all green groups on campus. We are pushing for a LEED certification policy for all new buildings at OSU. To start off we are throwing a CFL Raid in Steeb Hall Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. We will be trading incandescent light bulbs for 1,000 energy-saving compact flourescent bulbs in the dorms. Hopefully we can spread the word about how easy LEED certification can be!!!

Sara, thank you for you comments about Green Drinks. I have come on this blog to invite environmentally minded folks to attend our events, which are held the third Thursday of every month at the Surly Girl Saloon in the Short North. The next event will be November 16 and feature the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm, a collective of local organic farmers. You can keep in the loop with all the Green Drinks goings on by signing up at www.greendrinks.org.

We are also searching for a volunteer to help with managing the Green Drinks e-mail list and other IT challenges. If you are interested in helping out, please send me an e-mail at tad@shepherdadvisors.com.

I graduated from OSU with degrees in forestry and urban planning. I really appreciate present day students that are focusing on sustainable living. I recently visited Holland, Denmark and Sweden. In 17 days I saw only 2 SUVs, but tens of thousands of bikes and people walking. I’ve hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and belong the AT Long Distance Hiking Association. I believe in walking.
